FOMAA Capital Region is Organizing a National Online Chess Tournament

 On Sunday March 17, 2024, 9 AM to 2 PM EST, FOMAA Capital Region is organizing a National Chess Tournament. The Chess Tournament will be held online to make it easier for participants interested in playing chess from the 12 different regions of FOMAA. It will be played with chesskid.com. Although the Registration deadline is March 11, 2024, the organizers are extending the date to Tuesday, March 12, 2024 to encourage wider participation.

The National Chess Tournament will be held in three categories, elementary, middle and high school levels. Being a National Organization, FOMAA is well-positioned to organize national level sports and games. Any tournaments at the National Level makes a big difference, since many schools, colleges, and universities look for students who demonstrated success at the National level. This is a huge advantage to succeed in college applications.

Although many member associations organize Chess Tournaments locally, budding chess players are not getting an opportunity to play at the National level. Similarly, many of the member association games are limited to unrated games. United Chess Federation or chess.com rated games are essential for chess players to climb up in their ladders to become strong players and get more opportunities at further higher levels. Likewise, the chess ratings can be improved based on the performance.

The National Chess will be held in both unrated and rated categories. For rated tournament, we are using 0-900, 900 – 1200, and 1200 and above categories. The registration is bare minimum to encourage participation of more national players. In the rated category, if there are more than 10 players in each category, the organizers are planning to provide cash awards.

The tournament will be conducted online at www.chesskid.com. The players need to register directly at, https://www.chesskid.com/groups/register/DUWT2A.

Participants are recommended to play practice games with other members of the portal before the tournament date and get accustomed to the user interface. Playing practice games will establish a rating by the portal to group participants. Players should ensure that they are familiar with the rule book and game timings.

The organizes including FOMAA Capital Region RVP, Dr. Madhu Nambiar from the Kerala Association of Greater Washington, National Committee members Mathew Varghese (Biju) from the Kairali of Baltimore, and Rajeev Sukumaran from the Kerala Cultural Society, and all the current leaders of the Capital Region indicated that if the tournament becomes successful, Capital region can try to conduct national/international chess tournament for adults. They also said, the Chess Tournament will be made a permanent FOMAA tournament providing national/international level opportunities are available for all the members. The organizers also planning to make FOMAA Capital Region a member of the United States Chess Federation, so that anyone playing the tournament can add their ratings to USCF rating.  The Chess Tournament will provide consistent opportunities for FOMAA members and fulfill FOMAA’s objectives for organizing national and international level activities in the future.
