Nobody exactly knows whether they had a platonic relationship or sexual. Her daughter admitted that even after 1947 they used to exchange letters till 1960 when her mother died. She wrote that her mother was quite madly connected to Nehru, so much that even Mr. Mountbatten used to turn a blind eye as we can see in a lot of historical pictures…

Perhaps Dickie (as nehru called Mountbatten) did that intentionally to have a smooth and close relationship with the first PM during the last days of British Raj in India. Maybe it was a small attempt to shape India’s initial policies in favor of the former masters and perhaps he even succeeded.

Nehru being a widower at that time and a bit ‘’modern’’ than the contemporary Indians, shared an intense relationship with Edwina, though maybe not physical but something that very rarely husbands would allow their wives to have even today. Same goes for Edwina who at that time was described as one of the best dressed women, who shopped lavishly, was a party chic and was far more glamorous than her Naval Officer turned Viceroy husband. He was not much romantically connected with his wife (He had some affairs too !!!). This maybe a reason she searched to fulfill herself in other men. Mountbatten once said, that though they were a couple, both spent more time with others in bed.

Before Mr. Nehru (or maybe even while being with him), Edwina, the social butterfly, had relationships (even sexual) with a lot of elite English and American men, from aristocrats to owners of media houses and that too after the birth of her first daughter !!! So no surprise it was easy for Mr. Nehru to flirt with her.

But whatever maybe b/w them, it pushed a lot of ‘’modern’’ ideas in the minds of elite and foreign educated politicians of the infant democracy. This may have even pushed these ideas in popular culture of Bollywood, which worshiped our first PM, while depicting the noble elites and their ‘’liberal’’ notions about having affairs in the contemporary movies. At the same time his image was kept clean by the same Bollywood and political class that followed him by hiding this side of his life from yet conservative rural people and from the little Bhatijas and Bhatijis !!!

Even when there was a movie being filmed on this affair, staring Irfan Khan, Hugh Grant and Kate Blanchett, it’s filming was dramatically stopped….The congress govt.s that followed had been very successful in hiding this affair and the Gori Choti Chachi from children and rural vote-banks. But at the same time they completely or perhaps carelessly failed to hide it from the elites, who anyway didn’t have any problem with that :P….

Whatever it was, but surely Mr. Nehru has so much for young ‘’liberal’’ youth to learn from him…..The love story, though not heavenly, was surely interesting and pleasurable :)

വെളുത്തവന്മാർ പറയും ചത്തുപോയ കറമ്പനാണ് നല്ല കറമ്പൻ എന്ന് .എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ ചത്തുപോയ നെഹ്റുവാണ് കാരശ്ശേരിക്ക് "ഐക്ക്യം ഊട്ടി ഉറപ്പിച്ച പ്രധാന മന്ത്രി " പിന്നെ മുണ്ട് ഇടത്തോട്ട് ഉടുക്കണോ വലത്തോട്ടുടുക്കണോ അതോ മുണ്ട് ഇല്ലാതെ നടക്കണോ എന്നൊക്കെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറെ പ്രശ്നം . ഏതായാലും നെഹ്‌റു മൗണ്ട് ബാട്ടൻ പ്രഭുവിന്റെ പുറകെ പനറ്റി നടക്കുന്നത് . മുസ്ലിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഒന്നിൽ കൂടുതൽ വിവാഹം കഴിക്കാവുന്നത് കൊണ്ട്, കാരശേരിക്ക് അത് പ്രശ്നം ആയിരിക്കില്ല .  പിന്നെ ഒരു ചോദ്യത്തിന് ഉത്തരമായി ഒരു പ്രഭാഷണം നടത്തുന്ന പരിപാടി ബോറടിയാണ് .  ഒരു പ്രഭാഷണം ഇരുപത് മിനിറ്റും. ചോദ്യത്തിന് ഉത്തരം രണ്ടു മിനിറ്റിൽ കൂടുതൽ ആകാതെ സൂക്ഷിച്ചാൽ , എല്ലാവർക്കും സമയത്തിന് വീട്ടിൽ പോകാം

A controversial Hollywood film based on the relationship between India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Edwina Mountbatten, the wife of Britain's last Viceroy, has been temporarily shelved.

അല്ലാ  നാട്ടിൽ  നിന്നു  വരുന്ന  സാഹിത്യകാരൻ , സിനിമാക്കാരൻ , രാഷ്ട്രിയക്കാരൻ , മന്ത്രി, പത്രക്കാരൻ , സുന്ദരി  കുലുക്കി  നിർത്ത  തരുണീമണികൾ  ഒക്കെ  കൂട  നിന്നു  ഫോട്ടോ  എടുത്തു  അവരേ  ചുമ്മിയും  ചുവന്നും  നടന്നു ഫോട്ടോ  എടുത്തു  പത്രത്തിൽ  കൊടുക്കാൻ  ചിലർക്കു  ആനന്ദമാണ് . അവരുടെ  ഒക്കെ  നീണ്ട  പ്രസംഗവും  ഒരു  നിസാര  മണ്ട  ചോദ്യത്തിന്  അര  മണിക്കൂർ  പ്രസംഗ  ഉത്തരവും .  ഒക്ടോബറിൽ  ജനധിപത്യമില്ലാത്ത  രണ്ടു  പ്രസ് ക്ലബ്  കാരുടേയും  കൺവെൻഷൻ  ഉണ്ടന്ന്  കേട്ടു .  അവിടയും  ഇതൊക്കെത്തന്നെയാകും . നാട്ടിലെ  പ്രസ് ആണ് , ടീവി  ആണു  എന്നോക്കെ  പറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നവരുടെ  മാത്രം  വമ്പൻ  ക്ലാസ്  എടുപ്പും  ബോറിങ്  പ്രസംഗവും , പിന്നെ  ചില  മണ്ടൻ  ചോതിയുത്തര  പംക്തിയും . ഓരോ  ചോദ്യത്തിനും  15  മിനിറ്റു  ഉത്തര  പ്രസംഗവും . പിന്നെ  അറിവില്ലാത്ത  ചില  തരുണീമണികളുടെ  എംസി  വിളയാട്ടവും .  രണ്ടാമത്തെ  പ്രസ് ക്ലബ്  ആണെങ്കിൽ  ഒരാൾ  സ്ഥിരം  ചെയര്മാനാണ്‌ .  എല്ലാം  അയാളുടെ  ഭരണം . ബാക്കിയെല്ലാം  ചട്ടുകങ്ങൾ .  പിന്നെ  അവിടെ  കുറെ  ഫോമാ  ഫൊക്കാന  സ്ഥിരം  സ്ഥാപകക്കാർ , പിന്നെ  ചില  സ്ഥിരം  മേയർ , ജഡ്‌ജി  എല്ലാം . അവർ  ഫ്രീ ആയി  വന്നു  അവരുടെ  സ്ഥിരം  വീരവാദം  തട്ടിവിടും .  പണം കൊടുക്കുന്നവർക്ക്  സ്റ്റേജിലും  ഇരിപ്പടവും  പൊന്നാടവും  കൊടുത്തും  പ്രസാദിപ്പിക്കും . ബാക്കിയുള്ള  ഇവിടെയുള്ള  എത്ര  വലിയ  അറിവുള്ളവനും  ഒരവസരവും  കിട്ടിയെന്നു  വരികയില്ല . ഒരുപക്ഷേ , അവരെ  അപമാനിച്ചാകും  വിടുക . അവരുടെ  ഒക്കെ  പണവും  പിടുങ്ങി  എന്നിരിക്കും .  ഇവിടെ  ചോദ്യം  ഇതാണ് . നാട്ടിൽ  നിന്ന്  വരുന്നവർ  മാത്രമാണോ  അറിവുള്ളവർ ? ഇവിടെ  ലോക്കൽ ആയി  അവരേക്കാൾ  പതിൽമടങ്ങു  ബുദ്ധികാർ  ഇല്ലയോ ? അവരെ  താഴ്ത്താതെ  അവർക്കും  വിലയും  അവസരവും  കൊടുക്കുക .  മുകളിലെ  പടം  നോക്കുക . നാട്ടിലെ  ഒരു പുള്ളിയെ  പിടിച്ചു  മഹാ  ദീവ്യൻ  ആക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു
